about project

Adobe Illustrator, InDesign

The mission of this project was to explore cultural heritage, recognizing that unless you are Native American, your family came to the United States from somewhere else. My grandparents on my mom’s side immigrated from Mexico in the late 1960s, which led me to reflect on the music that shaped my family and upbringing. I learned from my family that ranchera music was always present. For this project, I researched influential artists in the ranchera genre and handpicked songs that best represented and celebrated Mexican culture, traditions, and storytelling. The visual style of the vinyl is inspired by lotería, a game frequently played at family gatherings and deeply connected to my personal memories. Every element of the vinyl was hand-drawn using colored pencils, emphasizing warmth, texture, and a handmade quality. Typefaces were selected from Lechuga Type, a type design studio based in Querétaro, Mexico, to further ground the project in its cultural origins. The imagery throughout the vinyl references symbols of traditional Mexican culture, mirroring the ranchera genre’s celebration of heritage, identity, and tradition. I fully produced the final piece by printing, folding, and assembling the vinyl record, booklet, sleeve, and disc sticker, thereby making the project a tangible object. This hands-on process deepened my understanding of packaging design and transformed the research into a physical, meaningful artifact.
